Artist and Art Educator

ArtPrize 2016 - Pompeii

As an educator, I always challenge my students to have guts when they do their art. Explore. Experiment. Fail. Accept. Learn. Reflect. Now it's my turn to do just that. Pompeii is like no other painting (or series of paintings) I have done before. After finishing my first year of teaching high school art, I wanted to take many of the techniques I teach my students and apply it to this piece. I have discovered this is a lot more difficult than I thought. I look forward to sharing with my students the lessons I have learned and keep learning throughout this style of painting. I often paint with thin layers of glazes with liquin and linseed oils while mixing and applying colors to the surface. I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone and apply thicker layers that are more permanent than the thin layers I carefully apply.
