ArtPrize 2018 - Natural Vulnerability

This collection of paintings represent the challenge of accepting vulnerability. We are connected to nature, yet it is vulnerable to our harm and destruction of it. Sometimes it is resilient. Other times, it needs more support to grow again.

This same type of resilience is needed in the growing journey of an artist. Feeling vulnerable as an artist means it is time for you to take risks (whether you like it or not). My support has been my professors and classmates at KCAD. My paintings are created using unfamiliar techniques with palette knives, cold wax, and glazing. These new ways of painting diminishes my desire to portray colors in a representational way. The limited palette and tools encourages me to take those greater risks I have been searching for. This same type of risk taking can be explored in any journey throughout life and is seen throughout nature.

It is remarkable what beauty can arise from vulnerability.
